It's a very windy Thursday, November 05, 2009 in Bellingham, WA, and we all woke up to some sad news. Whatcom Middle School, which has been undergoing renovations to make it earthquake proof, was extensively damaged by fire, possibly from a welder's spark blown by wind. The cause remains uncertain at this time, but the school district is now scrambling to relocate approximately 600 students and staff elsewhere.
Whatcom Middle School, built in 1903 with a major addition in 1916, is perhaps the oldest school in Bellingham. I went to Whatcom Middle School when young, my father and husband's mother went there when it was a high school and my grandchildren are present students..so it remains to be seen how this piece of history will play out.
Some exciting news! The Senate passed the Homebuyer Tax Credit (within the Unemployment Bill) yesterday, November 4, 2009. It now goes to the House and could receive the President's signature within the week. This is welcome news to the real estate industry in Washington. The bill extends the $8,000 first-time homebuyer credit through April 30, 2010 and provides a $6,500 credit to new purchasers who have lived in their current residence for five or more years.*
UPDATE: We've just been informed that the House voted 403-12 to extend and expand the tax credit-this to include many buyers who already own homes. President Obama is expected to sign the bill Friday.
Buyers who have owned their current homes at least five years would be eligible for tax credits of up to $6,500. First-time homebuyers (or anyone who hasnt owned a home in the last three years) would still get up to $8,000. To qualify, buyers in both groups have to sign a purchase agreement by April 30, 2010 and close by June 30th.
The credit is available for the purchase of principal homes costing $800,000 or less. Vacation homes are ineligible. The credit would be phased out for individuals with annual incomes above $125,000 and for joint filers with incomes above $225,000.**
